R.I.P. Paul Newman

By ohcyrus

What a hero he was…

I love this quote, on why he started The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, a free camp for terminally ill kids:

“I wanted to acknowledge luck; the chance and benevolence of it in my life, and the brutality of it in the lives of others, who might not be allowed the good fortune of a lifetime to correct it.”
-Paul Newman

So humble. And I love this comment from a message board:

“I met him once at a charity event. I couldn’t speak, quite possibly a first for me. He shook my hand. I smiled and finally uttered, “It is thrilling to meet you.” He looked me right in the eyes and said, “And I feel the same.”

Me too. I remember when he came to Small Point. He was making a film nearby and just hung out playing cards at the home of the John Dean relatives. Word got out and people dribbled over, in ones and twos and threes, to see him (so the story goes). He was just totally cool about it, greeted people warmly, they’d leave, and he just kept playing cards all night.

O…I feel terrible your blog hasn’t been getting as many visits as you were hoping for. Somehow, I was expecting an email each time you post something, like Leif and Cilla did with theirs. Now that I know you’re not sending out word, I’ll check in more often.

The geese are doing their manuvers, practicing for the long haul south coming up soon. Maple leaves and sumac are bright red, apples are ripe, and everything else’s still green.

Lets pray the markets don’t completely melt down in the next two days…a distinct possibility.
